Champions League knockout stage: what do teams need to qualify?

With one round of fixtures to go in the Champions League group stages, there is still plenty to play for. Look below to read up on what each team requires from their final match. Bet here.

Group A

Atletico Madrid and Borussia Dortmund are already through to the next round, while Club Brugge are certain of a place in the Europa League knockout phase. In order to finish first, Dortmund must win in Monaco and hope Atletico fail to beat Brugge.

Group B

Barcelona are assured of first place in the group no matter how results pan out on the final match day. Tottenham will join them in the next round if their result against the Catalans matches or betters the one Inter Milan manage at home to PSV, who are already certain of fourth spot.

Group C

This is the tightest group by far, with three teams able to finish top of the table. Napoli are currently leading and will be through to the next round should they avoid defeat against Liverpool, or score and lose by just one goal (e.g. 2-1, 3-2, 4-3 etc). Last season’s finalists must win to stand any chance of progress, and even then that might not be enough if PSG beat Crvena Zvezda. Regardless of their final result, the Parisians will also be certain of a place in the next round should Liverpool fail to win.

It becomes truly complicated if Crvena Zvezda and PSG play out a draw and Liverpool win. In this scenario, all three teams would be level on nine points. Liverpool would go through as they will have picked up six points against PSG and Napoli, both of whom will have only taken five points each the matches amongst the three of them. PSG would then go through on goals scored, provided Napoli lose by a score line that is lower than 4-3.

Group D

Porto are guaranteed first place in the group, while Schalke are sure of second. Galatasary will finish third and move into the Europa League if they can match Lokomotiv Moscow’s final result.

Group E

Bayern Munich and Ajax are through to the last 16, with the German outfit certain of top spot should they avoid defeat to the Dutch in their final match. Benfica will finish third regardless of the outcome of their game with AEK Athens.

Group F

The only side certain of a place in the next round are Manchester City, who will clinch first place with a point against Hoffenheim, or if Lyon fail to beat Shakhtar Donetsk. The French side will also be through should they avoid defeat in Ukraine.

Group G

Reigning champions Real Madrid have qualified for the next round as group winners, while AS Roma are certain of second place. Viktoria Plzen will finish above CSKA Moscow and move to the Europa League, provided their result at home to Roma is equal to or better than that managed by CSKA in Madrid.

Group H

Juventus are into the hat for the next round and will stay in first place if they win. Manchester United are also through and can leapfrog the Old Lady should they beat Valencia and Juventus fail to win at Young Boys. Juventus can also finish first with a defeat, provided United do not win.
