How do Liverpool compare to best title winners?

Nine match days remain in the Premier League season and Liverpool are set to be crowned title winners after arguably the most dominant campaign ever witnessed in England.

Twenty-seven wins from 29 games means that their long-awaited Premier League triumph will be memorable in more ways than one. In fact, had it not been for the suspension of fixtures, they could have potentially already secured it.

Their impressive march to the title has seen fans argue whether Liverpool compare favourably to other great English title winners. Here we look at how Jurgen Klopp’s side stack up against the best teams in English history. You can bet on football here.

Manchester United 98-99: Treble winners

Sir Alex Ferguson’s side completed an unprecedented hat trick in 1999. The Premier League and FA Cup double had already been taken from Arsenal before they added the prestigious Champions League trophy to their haul. No English side had claimed all three trophies in a single season.

Having been recently eliminated from both the FA Cup and Champions League, Liverpool cannot match them in that regard. However, United’s pursuit of other silverware meant their league title was far from convincing. They amassed just 79 points, a total that Liverpool equalled after 27 games this season.

Arsenal 03-04: Invincibles

For a brief period it looked as though Liverpool could match Arsenal’s achievement of 16 years ago. The Gunners won the title that season without losing a single game, a record that has stood since. Arsene Wenger’s side were often criticised for not having added to their trophy cabinet that season. However, they managed to reach later rounds in each cup competition than Liverpool have this term.

Defeat at Watford last month means that the Reds’ own tilt at the record has fallen short. In terms of dominance, Liverpool compare kindly though. They should be able to beat the Gunners’ tally of 90 points, while they have already recorded more wins.

Chelsea 04-05: Best defence

Jose Mourinho delivered Chelsea their first league trophy in 50 years in his first season in England. Built on the experience of John Terry and the security of new signing Petr Cech, the Blues conceded just 15 goals en route to becoming champions, a record that still stands today.

Liverpool cannot compare in this regard, having already shipped 21 goals. They need 14 points from a possible 27 to beat their points tally, though. They can also still match Chelsea’s one defeat.

Manchester City 17-18: Most points

This is the side that Liverpool compare to best. They are also the only one from whom the Reds can take the record.

Pep Guardiola’s second season in England saw City redefine what it meant to win the title. Two defeats and four draws meant that they won the title with a record 100 points, sealed in the final seconds of their last match by a late Gabriel Jesus goal.
