Cristiano Ronaldo stole the show on Wednesday night with a superb hat-trick to inspire his side to yet another final. A typical 25-yard free-kick form the Ballon d’Or winner in the 25th minute of Portugal v Switzerland opened the scores.

The Swiss drew level in controversial fashion as they were initially denied a penalty before Portugal won a penalty of their own through Bernardo Silva. An intervention by VAR saw the penalty appeal upheld for a tug from Nelson Semedo on Steven Zuber.

Switzerland gave a good account of themselves in the second half but were punished by the big man for the big occasions in the 88th minute and a final goal in stoppage time.

The Juventus forward drew a lot of praise from his manager Fernando Santos after the game  as he described the Juventus forward as a genius.

Netherlands rise continues

In the other semi-final, the Netherlands overcame England 3-1 after extra-time on Thursday evening.

Marcus Rashford scored from the penalty spot to put the Three Lions in front, but a Matthijs de Ligt header from a corner levelled things up.

VAR stepped in again and denied Jesse Lingard what would have been a winning goal, but from then, it was all Netherlands. John Stones had a calamitous day at the heart of the defence and by the end of the 120 minutes, a Kyle Walker own goal and Quincy Promes finish, sealed the deal for the Dutch.
