Two Wolves’ wing backs and a goal-scoring defender make our Team of the Week.
Bernd Leno (Arsenal)
For the second week in a row an Arsenal goalkeeper makes our team as a first half injury to Petr Cech offered summer signing Bernd Leno the chance to make his Premier League debut against Watford. A smart save from Troy Deeney was followed by a number of convincing clearances from the German international, who has had to wait his turn at the Emirates.
Matt Doherty (Wolves)
Although a defender by nature, Doherty has license to attack under Nuno Espirito Santo and was yet again influential in Wolves’ win over Southampton. Twenty three of his 72 touches were in the Saints’ half of the field, including his assist for fellow full back Jonny. Amongst more famous names, the right back continues to shine.
David Luiz (Chelsea)
After a difficult 2017/18 campaign, Luiz looks back to his best at Stamford Bridge and made seven clearances (including one from the line) to deny Liverpool on Saturday. Only Jorginho had more touches of the ball for Chelsea, who maintain their unbeaten start to the season with that draw.
Harry Maguire (Leicester)
Maguire was the man of the match as Leicester defeated Newcastle at St. James’ Park. Having already denied Joselu with a perfectly timed challenge, the centre back then won a penalty after his shot was handled by DeAndre Yedlin. He then sealed the win in the second half with a powerful header. That was Leicester’s first clean sheet away from home since March.
Jonny (Wolves)
Jonny scored his first goal in the Premier League since arriving from Celta Vigo to make certain Wolves’ victory against Southampton. The Spanish left back has started all of his new side’s league games this season and looks at ease in the English top flight. The same can be said for his teammates too.
Mark Noble (West Ham)
West Ham’s captain demonstrated that he still has the ability to influence matches with a tireless display against Manchester United. Only Nemanja Matic completed more passes (58) during the game, while the Irons’ midfielder’s tally of 81 touches was the third highest. He also set up Marko Arnautovic for the hosts’ third goal – his second assist of the season.
Raheem Sterling (Manchester City)
Sterling was the finisher and the creator against Brighton, with a goal in the first half and an assist for Sergio Aguero in the second. He now has four goals and two assists in six games this season, and has found in the net in all of his league appearances at the Etihad so far.
Gylfi Sigurdsson (Everton)
Having missed a penalty to open the scoring, Sigurdsson atoned for his error with an unerring left-footed strike to give the Toffees the lead. He then scored Everton’s third to give his side just their second win of the season. A much needed result, and clean sheet, for Marco Silva’s side.
Felipe Anderson (West Ham)
Felipe Anderson announced himself to the Premier League in style in the Irons’ win over Manchester United. He broke the deadlock after five minutes with a cute backheel and went on to make seven tackles during the game, a match high. A manager’s dream.
Marko Arnautovic (West Ham)
Despite having not trained due to a knee injury, Arnautovic still bullied the inexperienced Manchester United defence with his usual pomp. His game was not solely based on speed and strength, though, as he showed guile to stay onside and run in on goal to finish the scoring for West Ham. Is he the best player outside the “Big Six”?
Daniel Sturridge (Liverpool)
What a cameo, and what a goal! Sturridge was summoned from the bench against his former club with just four minutes to go at Stamford Bridge, and took matters into his own hands to level the scores. Kepa Arrizabalaga was left with no chance to keep out the shot, which arced perfectly into the top corner. That strike could prove crucial later in the season.
