The biggest transfer of the day saw Romelu Lukaku depart Manchester United to join Inter Milan. The Belgian leaves Old Trafford after just two seasons, with a record of 42 goals in 96 appearances.

Tottenham started the day heavily linked with several players, and they wrapped up deals for midfielder Giovani Lo Celso and winger Ryan Sessegnon. However, the Champions League runners up could not agree on wages with Juventus’ Paulo Dybala, who remained in Turin.

Arsenal finally made the defensive reinforcements that fans were crying out for. Kieren Tierney joined from Celtic and will be expected to make the left back slot his own. The more surprising signing was David Luiz, who moved across London from rivals Chelsea.

The Gunners’ late business gave Everton the opportunity to sign Nigeria forward Alex Iwobi. The 23-year-old signed a five-year deal at Goodison Park and could become the biggest sale in Arsenal’s history. The Toffees also moved to sign Wilfried Zaha and Marcos Rojo, but the transfers did not materialise.

Belgium midfielder Denis Praet became the latest midfielder to join Leicester, where he will team up with other signings Ayoze Perez and compatriot Youri Tielemans.

Lastly, Newcastle re-signed former striker Andy Carroll, who was out of contract after leaving West Ham in the summer.
