The midweek football calendar will resume today and here is a look at what to expect across European leagues
Monaco woes to continue?
Monaco have not been able to get up and running this season and they will be desperate to get all three points against Angers when they play them tonight. They were bullied on occasion against newly-promoted side Nimes at the weekend and they never looked like winning the game. Strikingly, they were able to create a number of chances, none of which were converted. They have equally been disappointed in other games against weak opposition such as their draws to last year’s 17th and 18th placed sides Lille and Toulouse respectively. They haven’t been any better against quality opposition after losing to Bordeaux and Marseille too. This is a disappointing start to their season and we don’t see that changing tonight as well.
More goals for Robert Lewandowski
Bayern Munich have been the reigning champions in Germany for six years now, but they still look as hungry as ever for success. Robert Lewandowski has been particularly unstoppable this season with his contribution upfront where he has been their main danger man. His goal from the penalty spot last weekend against Schalke took his tally to eight goals for the season, including one hat-trick, and he should like his chances to keep that run going here against an out-of-sorts Augsburg.
High scoring Freiburg
Schalke will head to the Schwarzwald stadion to face Freiburg in search of their first league win of the season on Tuesday. However, they have plenty of reasons to worry when you consider their opponents’ current goalscoring form. Freiburg have averaged 17 shots on goal over two matches at home and have the fifth highest average in the league so far. Their last two Bundesliga matches have seen a return of six goals and we do not see much difference in tonight fixture as we expect a number of goals from the hosts.
Inter Milan to extend the upward trend
It has been a huge week for Inter Milan, as they managed to string two wins together in all competitions. They first snatched a late win against Tottenham in the Champions League and more recently against Sampdoria in the Serie A. Luciano Spalletti’s men have won 15 of their last 17 matches at home to Fiorentina, their opponents for the night. With their form picking up just at the right time, we expect the Nerazzurri to continue with their upward trend.
Toulouse’s surprise
Toulouse are unbeaten in their last five and will be looking for their fourth win of the season and first over St. Etienne in five attempts. This is an incredible achievement for Toulouse, who only remained in the league by the skin of their teeth last season after taking part in the relegation play-offs. The visitors will need to be sharp in front of goal considering the hosts’ current record. The hosts have conceded three in their last five, which might be a problem for their visitors who only won against Caen following a penalty and goal line scramble during the weekend. This looks like another good showing waiting to happen for the Toulouse faithful.
