The weekend is over and here is a look at some of the winners and losers from the Premier League.
Winners
Liverpool
Liverpool’s record-breaking start to the season continued with a 3-0 win over Southampton at Anfield on Saturday. This moved them clear at the top of the league table ahead of Manchester City and Chelsea’s who trail by two points. They have now won six consecutive fixtures in what is their best start to a Premier League season yet. Most importantly for Jurgen Klopp is the fact that his side showed no signs of complacency despite playing in Europe three days prior to this fixture. He has also been rotating his players, a clear demonstration that they have the right depth to challenge on many fronts.
Burnley
Burnley moved off the foot of the Premier League with an emphatic first win of the season over Bournemouth at Turf Moor. The Clarets got off to a quick start and by half-time they were 2-0 up thanks to goals from Matej Vydra and Aaron Lennon just before the break. Sean Dyche could not hide his joy and went on to claim that their performance during the weekend is all they are about. He will be keen to build on this in their upcoming fixtures and they can take faith in the fact that they won against a formidable opposition.
Tottenham
Tottenham got back to winning ways after experiencing a dip in form in the last couple of weeks. A loss away to Watford was followed by 2-1 defeat to title hopefuls Liverpool at home before being humble by Inter Milan in the Champions League. Their visit to Brighton was expected to be a tough outing but they managed to rally themselves and get back to winning ways. Harry Kane’s penalty is expected to boost his confidence ahead of this action packed part of the season.
Losers
Alexis Sanchez
Alexis Sanchez has struggled for form since making the switch from Arsenal to Manchester United. So dire is his situation that the last time he scored a Premier League goal was way back in March. He was handed a start in United’s home fixture against Wolves but had to be withdrawn early into the second half for ineffective display. He is no doubt a very talented player but he will soon run out of time to prove himself and could find himself out of the starting line-up.
Bournemouth
Bournemouth suffered a 4-0 loss away to Burnley following a very impressive start to the new season. They have accumulated ten points so far and this was an opportunity for them to better their results and remain in the Europa League places. All is not lost for the Cherries but they will be very concerned with the manner in which they conceded four goals without reply.
Everton
Everton have seen a mixed start to their new season and Arsenal were the latest opponents to snatch points from them. Marco Silva has won only one of his first six Premier League games as Toffees boss. If things continue as they are, he will come under pressure from the fans. Even though Everton have a poor record away to Arsenal, their loss will not help matters and it will serve as a wakeup call ahead of their next fixture to Fulham.
