The 30th match day in the Premier League did not disappoint. From Spurs and Manchester United losing and Arsenal and Southampton earning crucial wins, it was yet another eventful weekend. Winners
Arsenal
Arsenal went into this fixture against Manchester United sitting fifth and looking to consolidate their top four push. Although the Gunners weren’t really at their best two goals were enough for them to take maximum points. A footing error from United keeper David de Gea allowed a swerving shot from Granit Xhaka to slowly roll into the net. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scored a controversial penalty to seal the deal for the hosts, but United caused Arsenal plenty of problems hitting the post twice and missing glorious chances. The win saw Arsenal leapfrog United to go fourth in the table. With tough matches coming up the top four will still go down to the wire, but this win might just be pivotal in deciding who plays in the Champions League next season.
Southampton & Newcastle
Both of these teams hovering just above the relegation zone registered important wins over the weekend. Their victories were earned in sensational style with both of them having to come from behind to snatch all the points. Southampton beat top-four hopefuls Spurs on Saturday, coming back from a goal down to score two second-half goals, including a sublime effort from James Ward-Prowse. Newcastle came from two goals down to beat Everton to improve their chances of survival. The wins were important for both them who are still fighting to secure their top-flight status.
Over 2.5 Goals
Six matches out of ten produced more than two goals over the weekend in the Premier League compared to game week 30 which had four matches recording Over 2.5 Goals. Four matches were just a goal short of making it a perfect week for Over 2.5 Goals.
Losers
Burnley
Burnley suffered their third straight loss at Liverpool. Despite scoring first, the Clarets were unable to prevent the deadly Liverpool attack and eventually went down 4-2. After a good start to 2019 where they won four matches and drew three, they are once again in the relegation scrap with just eight matches to go. They sit 17th with 30 points just two above 18th placed Cardiff City. They will play their next two matches at home against Wolves and Leicester and this might be a good opportunity to get them out of the danger zone.
Manchester United & Spurs
Manchester United failed to take advantage of another Tottenham Hotspur loss when they went down 2-0 at Arsenal. With a win, the Red Devils would have gone level on points with Spurs whose poor form in the league continued with a 2-1 loss at Southampton. Arsenal’s win enabled them to leapfrog an in-form United side who were fresh off a sensational win at PSG on Wednesday. The top four race is now getting interesting and United will feel they lost a golden opportunity to go level with an out of form Spurs. With eight games left, every match for top four hopefuls will be like a final, winner takes all.
Marco Silva and Everton
When Marco Silva took over Everton at the start of this season, players and fans were filled with optimism. He was expected to bring the much desired attacking football and lift the depressive mood brought about by the joyless tactics of Sam Allardyce. However, under Silva, football has improved but the results are still lamentable. On Saturday, they let a 2-0 lead slip at Newcastle a game which ended in defeat. They have now lost six matches in their last ten and won only three in that period. His job has been put under the microscope and it’s only a matter of time when he’s given the boot.
